My mother and her sisters often fought over their favorite heroes. If Chandra masi loved Jeetendra, Devi masi loved Amitabh Bachchan and my mom was a big Rajesh Khanna fan. There were dedicated albums that were created for each of these actors and their hits and flops were hugely celebrated or ridiculed!! There were fights. Serious fights!! That suddenly resolved one day with the advent of a new star- Vinod Khanna, a man who managed to build bridges amongst Khubani sisters who had been at constant wars for years. That was the magic of Vinod Khanna.
Here’re a few things you might not know about him-
- It’s not only Shahrukh Khan who started his career with a negative role. Vinod Khanna set this trend long ago when he made his debut in Sunil Dutt’s 1968 filmMan Ka Meet directed by Adurthi Subba Rao, as a villain.
- You win some, you lose some. Reportedly, his role in Qurbani was first offered to Amitabh Bachchan. The role came to Khanna after Big B refused it. The film went on to be the highest-grossing film of that year and a musical hit. And then he refused Rocky that bore a new star in the industry- Sanjay Dutt.
- He was one of the highest paid actors of his times. In the period 1974-1982 Vinod Khanna was paid more than Jeetendra in the film Insaan and more than Amitabh Bachchan in 4 films like Parvarish, Hera Pheri, Khoon Pasina, Amar Akbar Anthony. Khanna was paid more than Rishi Kapoor, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Rajinikanth, Salman Khan in the films he did with them from 1987-1995.
Now that he is no more, we wish his soul rests in peace.
RIP Vinod Khanna!
