Project Intern | Bharat Sakhrani

Q : Hi Bharat, First things first, (Welcome to City 1016) Tell us how old are you and how long have you been in Dubai?

Firstly, thank you for the warm welcome. I am born and brought up in Dubai, so that is 21 years, back when the famous 7-star Burj Al Arab was yet under construction. #PedayishiNRI!

  Q: School school? College college?

I did my schooling with the Indian High School Dubai, from KG-1 till the 12th standard. After high school I joined Heriot Watt University, Dubai, currently pursuing my 4th Year in Accountancy and Finance MA (Hons).

Q: When did you realize radio was something you wanted to get into?

Music has been my passion since forever. I remember having more pictures with speakers than with my parents as a kid. 😛 I am currently a certified open format DJ who spins EDM; English Commercials, and mainly HAMAARA BOLLYWOOD. The passion for radio started back in 11th standard when my High School gave me an opportunity to turn my dream into a reality as an in-house RJ in our mini Recess Radio Studio where entertaining and interacting with students during the recess period of half an hour would be my daily job which included accepting requests and play latest Bollywood and Hollywood tracks.

My passion and hard work in this post got me promoted to the post of the Head RJ which helped me in developing my leadership skills (handling a group of 7 RJ’s under me) along with my public speaking skills (hosting several shows and segments). This push got me my first interaction with the City 1016 RJ’s. It was right after I got my results that I got the opportunity to be on the XXL Show with RJ Lokesh. Looking at the studio and the number of knobs, buttons, etc, I was in a state of shock, fear and surprise. That was the point where it hit me that this is what I want to do, this is where I want to be.

After that, during the last academic year I visited the studios for the second time representing HWUDC during the Breakfast No 1 Show with RJ Sid and RJ Malavika. All those old thoughts and curiousness came rushing back and then one fine day during my summer break, I got a call from Sid asking me if I would be interested in a Radio Programming Internship. I don’t remember even thinking for a second before I said yes for it and I can proudly state that it was one of my best decisions.

q: Like Movies? What are the last 3 movies you loved?

LOVE movies. In fact dram  a has been my hobby since 7th standard. Have won many awards for playing various roles, may it be, comedy, emotional, and various other genres. My mom has one huge complaint for me, that is, I will not miss watching any movie in the theatre, phirr chahe wohh Airlift jaisi movie ho ya Housefull 3 jaisi.

The last 3 movies I loved were the evergreen Andaz Apna Apna, Airlift, M.S. Dhoni.

q : What are the last 3 songs you loved so much, you couldn’t stop singing?

Now this is a difficult question. I cannot choose from the never-ending list of Bollywood songs, however, if you wake me up at 3-4 am and ask me to choose 3 songs to dance to and sing along it would be Kala Chashmah, Baby ko Bass Pasand Hain and High Heels.

Q: Three things you discovered after joining City 1016 studios?

  1. FIRSTLY, what exactly does each knob and button do. I remember just standing there looking at Sid operate the entire panel so smoothly wondering if one day I would be able to do the same, but for that I had to know what each of them meant.
  2. How huge the entire team behind City 1016 actually is, that is what actually makes it ‘UAE’s #1 Bollywood Radio Station’.
  3. The amount of preparation and the hard work behind the scenes for a smooth running 4 hour show on air.

Q: Things you just can’t wait for to discover/introduce at City 1016?

efore joining City I was pretty nervous as I was one of the very first interns with the brand and I wanted to give in my 100%. But along with this nervousness, I was also pretty eager to discover how exactly a Radio Station functions.

During the 7-week internship at City 1016 I managed to learn how to create and edit VoxBox for new movie reviews and also developed the skill to choose and come up with the topic of discussion for the day. My responsibilities also included creating the daily promos played on air; creating and uploading the daily podcasts which can be found on the podcasts section for Breakfast No 1. Keeping the social media pages and the website blogs active during using my photo/video editing and creative skills also gave me exposure to social media marketing. All these tasks helped me get a gist of the different sections of what goes on behind a radio show. I also introduced the idea of bringing in a Movie calendar per month which would help viewers and listeners to plan their Bollywood and Hollywood movies for the month in one glance.

All in all it was an amazing experience which helped me live my dream as a RJ Trainee at the UAE’s #1 Bollywood Radio Station with the best RJ Sid and RJ Malu as my tutors, guides, mentors but over and above everything, as friends.
