Actresses we want to see – Meenakshi Sheshadri
Today Rishi Kapoor shared a picture on his Twitter account and Bollywood fans went into a tizzy! He is seen standing next to his co-star of many films and yet she was almost unrecognizable!!! And after staring at the picture for a few seconds, it hits you! It’s Meenakshi Sheshadri – doe-eyed, beautiful, a brilliant dancer and definitely a power house of talent form the 1980’s and 90’s. And guess what? A Mum of two and settled in the States, she still looks as beautiful as she did when she was acting! If anything, going by that picture it’s a bit hard to believe she played Rishi Kapoor’s (Sorry Kapoor-unlce) love interest! But then that’s Bollywood for you!
So here’s getting to know her a little better!
Five things you didn’t know about Meenakshi Sheshadri!
1) At 17, she won the Miss India contest in 1981 – making her one of the youngest pageant winners ever.
2) Her real name is Shashikala Sheshadri but when Subhash Ghai decided to launch her in his film HERO, she changed it to Meenakshi as the showman was known to believe that actresses whose names start with the letter M – are lucky for him.
3) Her nickname is Cherry.
4) Director Rajkumar Santoshi was so smitten by Meenakshi Sheshadri that he vowed to never make films without her and even dedicated his film Damini (starring her in the lead role) to her with a line – “To Cherry, with Love” at the beginning of the film. The line was finally removed at her insistence as it greatly embarrassed her and her family.
5) She was greatly disillusioned with Bollywood and the politics of award ceremonies when she didn’t win a Filmfare Award for her power-packed and socially relevant performance in the film Damini in 1993. The award that year went to Juhi Chawla for Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke and led to the actress thinking of leaving Bollywood.
