A closer look at Raees

After his recent release Dear Zindagi where he’s played a sedate and calm therapist, it looks like he’s going back to his roots that made him famous and playing a bad guy again in Raees. But just like in Baazigar or Don, we can expect SRK to play a villian and still capture our hearts and root for him.

Set against the backdrop of the desert landscapes of Gujarat, the movie tells the story of the life of the criminal Abdul Latif, a bootlegger, played by SRK who is battling against the authorities, his nemesis being ACP Majumdar (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui). There’s Mahira Khan and Sunny Leone to provide colourful relief from the desert and the dark business of trading in illegal substances.
The movie was slated to release and compete with Sultan but due to scheduling conflicts, SRK had to finish shooting for Dilwale and Fanbefore he could get to work on Raees. Already during the shooting, there were issues with getting approvals to go ahead with the movie as Abdul Latif’s son tried to stop the movie from being made and a Pakistani actress being cast for the role of the heroine proved a controversial move as well.
But the co-producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani  that form Excel Entertainment managed to sort it out and we have a confirmed date for the release as the 25th of Jan 2017. Farhan Akhtar is also playing a cameo in the movie as SRK’s brother.
The movie is directed by the Rahul Dholakia, who won the National Award for his movie Parzania, He’s not made too many movies after that, with his last directorial venture being Lamhaa in 2010,  so we can’t wait to see his take on this story!
